The Oskomera Group is responsible for realisation of the facades and roof construction of the Gunwharf Tower in Portsmouth (UK). This ninety-eight metre high building with one-hundred and thirty-four apartments is distinguished by its elliptical floorplan, its sleek facades featuring partially white-clad ‘padding’ and its spectacular, oblique apex. The building was designed by Scott Brownrigg Limited of Guildford and commissioned by Berkeley Homes (Hampshire) Limited of Portsmouth.

Gunwharf Tower has thirty-one floors, of which the ground and first floors are taken up by the entry area — with access to lifts and stairs — and a restaurant. The apartments are located on the second to the twenty-third floors; the magnificent penthouses are situated on the twenty-fourth to the twenty-eighth floors; the twenty-ninth and thirtieth floors accomodate the technical rooms and the thirty-first floor houses the glass-washing machine.

The Oskomera Group manufactured, supplied and mounted the entire facade package for the Gunwharf Tower, including the sophisticated steel construction of the oblique apex. The curved facades from the second until the thirty-first floors are constructed from eighteen hundred completely prefabricated elements, referred to as unitized elements. These elements are highly diverse and include elements with transparent glass in a fixed and hinged design; elements with opaque shadow boxes; elements with sliding balcony doors; corner elements with balcony doors; elements with totally white cladding; corner elements with white cladding; elements with white cladding and fixed glass; elements with white cladding and a hinged window and drainpipe elements.
Until the nineteenth floor, the standard elements are measured 1200 x 2800 mm, while the balcony elements with sliding doors are twice as wide. Although the floors above the nineteenth have varying heights of 3375mm, 3050mm, 3100mm and 2850mm respectively, these elements are all 1200mm wide. Approximately 95% of all the facade elements were mounted on each storey using the usual method. All the elements are screwed down at each level.

All in all, the Gunwharf Tower forms a prestigious building — one about which the Oskomera Group can proudly say: We completed that!!
